Landscapes Through The Ages By Claude Lorrain s Seaport...
Landscaping Landscapes: Exploring the Creation of Landscapes since the 17th century to the Modern Era From the 1600s to present day, landscapes have evolved in color and style. As the Baroque era incorporated stories and modern landscape photography focuses on color and subject, landscape artistry has changed as new movements of art and history occur. A proposed exhibition of landscapes includes Claude Lorrainââ¬â¢s Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba, Van Goghââ¬â¢s Long Grass with Butterflies, Paul Nashââ¬â¢s Totes Meer (Dead Sea), and Ainsley Bennettââ¬â¢s Binary Haze. The works could be used in order to understand of how the portrayal of landscapes has changed from the 1600s to the modern day. Through the proposed exhibition, ââ¬Å"Landscapes through the Ages,â⬠one can follow the theme of how the historical context of different centuries has influenced the creation of landscape art. In Claude Lorrainââ¬â¢s Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba (1648), Lorrain depicts the biblical story of the Queen of Sheba visiting King Solomo n (Figure 1). Although painted in 1648 during the Baroque era, Seaport is a unique painting for the time. Choosing to paint landscapes over portraiture, Lorrain was considered an unconventional artist. Seen in Seaport is an example of his atypical style through his incorporation of a ââ¬Ëclassicalââ¬â¢ style in the architecture of his paintings (Langdon). Censorship Essay Introduction Should the performing arts receive equal as sports? The performing arts have been proven to aid in the growth of a childs mind. Yet sports keep the mind and body strong. This is a debate that has being going on for the past 20 years. On whether funding should be used to fund sports or the performing arts. Music education being the right of all children it must be taught in appropriate ways suggested by the geographical cultural and social environment (3). And yes, that is true. Every child should have the write to experience. Every person, in every culture is introduced to some form of music. Whether a person lives in Asia, Africa, Italy, or the USA. That person is introduced to the kind of music in that culture. But scientists have said time after time that Music lessons appear to strengthen the links between brain neurons and build new spatial reasoning, says psychologist, Frances Rauscher of University of California-Irving. The thought of teaching music in schools did not even beg in until the late 1970s. According to Bill Ivey who is the Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts By the late 1970s, we began to realize that along with scientific knowledge and physical fitness, we needed to feed the imagination of students with arts (Ivey, 56). Which says something about the United States. This country is always saying how everything is done for the future of this country, the children. Then, how come the idea of teaching music wasnt thought of till then? But at least the USA decided to mandate that the arts be taught in schools from elementary to high school. Not just in elementary schools or in high schools as electives, but as a comprehensive, sequential curriculum taught by qualified teachers, beginning with pre-school instruction and continuing with required courses for high school graduation (Ivey, 55). Later, into the 1980s the United States slowly began to evaluate what music did to the mind. How the mind was scoped by music, what music did to the brain and etc? The Music Education Association says, They feel that the arts will play a major roll in the future success of the educational system (6). By the late 1980s, Congress mandated that the National Endowment of the Arts to report on the status of arts education (Ivey, 56). And it was proven that children who study the arts score higher on test, do better in school, and even scored higher on the College Boards SATs. Our case for the critical importance of the arts is also bolstered by the College Boards report that students who study the arts in general, and music in particular, score considerably higher on both the verbal and math sections of the SAT (Ivey, 55). Music has also been shown to do better with high school students, It has been shown that high school music students have higher grade point averages than non-music students in the same school (6). Music students are out performing non-music students on the SATs. College bound seniors with coursework or experience in mus ic performance scored 52 percent higher on the verbal portion and 37 points higher on the math portion. Other groups have also studied the effects of music and the arts on the brain and on people. J.W. Flohr and D.C. Miller used an electroencephalogram to investigate subtle changes in brain electrical activity (Teaching Music, 41). The study showed that the activity in the temporal regions of the brain were higher then an average child. Proving that music does do something to the brain. Many other groups have done research or have seen what music does to a child or to people. Bob Schaffer of Colorado who is a member of the House of Representative says, recent scientific studies confirm what teachers of old have always known- music and the other arts stimulate higher brain function (11). According to the Music Education Association and Rauscher who is a Psychologist at UC- Irving, music does improve the mind. Rauscher says Music instruction can improve a childs spatial intelligence f or long periods of time- perhaps permanently (6) when he told The American Psychologist Association. Dr. Wilson who is another researcher feels these findings are so significant that it will lead to a universal understanding in the next century that music is an absolute necessity for the total development of the brain and individual (6). Music has multiple learning benefits, and recent studies establish a casual relationship between music and enhanced learning ability (6). Music has also been shown to have benefits later in life. Successful music students develop the skills necessary for a variety of occupations. Successful music students tend to posses the qualities and skills that are generally considered essential to employers in business education, and service organizations (6). The Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities has found a connection between students having music competence and high motivations in that they were more likely to achieve success in scho ol (6). The Music Education Association also says It has also been found that through involvement, in group music activities on the high school level, individual learn to support each other, maintain commitment and bond together for group goals (6). The last thing the Music Education Association says about how music improves the mind is that Music Education Association feels and has observed that student involvement in school music has a positive impact on other areas of their lives (6). David Rosenboom who is the dean at Calarts school of music says that creative musicians are always pioneers on a sonic arts frontier, whether listening, performing, composing, researching, studying, producing, presenting, improvising, analyzing, theorizing or writing about music (4). Music even establishes a part of college. Colleges look for people who participate in the arts because it takes a lot of effort, time, and dedication. Fred Hargadon, who is an ex-dean of Stanford, said, We look for stud ents who have taken part in orchestra, symphonic band, chorus and drama. It shows a level of energy and an ability to organize time that we are looking for here (6). Music lessons have also been shown to improve the mind. Several quotes from Music Education Online and The Music Education Association show that music lessons increase the mind. Such as this quote from the Music Education Association, Music studies increase in reading skills and math proficiency dramatically (6). Music lessons contribute to the development of the brain and spatial intelligence (6). Even Dr. Frank Wilson from the University of California School of Medicine says that his studies show that instrumental practice enhances coordinations, concentration and memory and also brings about the improvement of eyesight and hearing (6). There are even researchers that say that students who dont have access to an arts program is damaging their minds. Dr. Jean Houston of the Foundation for Mind Research says that childr en without access to an arts program are actually damaging their brain. They are not being exposed to non-verbal modalities, which help them earn skills like reading, writing and math much more easily (6). A survey done on band parents show that music is even important in the family. The survey found that 96% of them agree that many people dont know or understand the benefits of band (6). When the survey continued, non-band parents and band parents were survived on the educational benefits of band. 35% of the non-band parents surveyed felt that band provides educational benefits not found in other classrooms and that 78% of the same group felt that band is more educational then extra-curricular activities. Music is not just an art, it is also a subject. Music has the involvement of every subject taught in school. From science to math to even history. For example, Music is history. Music usually reflects the environment and times of its creation often even the country and/or racial f eelings (9). Music is also math. It is rhythmically based on the subdivisions of time into fractions, which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper (9). But at the end the most important thing is that music is an art. It allows a human being to take all these dry technically, boring, (but difficult) techniques and use them to create emotion. Thats one thing science can not duplicate; humanism, feeling, emotion, call it what you will (9). Many researchers, college professors, deans of colleges and people have said that music is a wonderful thing and that improves the mind. Algernon and Jack Essays Algernon and Jack Essay Algernon and Jack Essay The Importance of Being Earnest By Oscar Wild was first performed on the 14th of February 1895, St Valentines Day. It is a play about love and romance in the upper classes, it is set in the present (1890s). It is drawing room comedy, otherwise known as comedy of manors. Oscar Wild is one of the worlds literary greats, he wrote this play shortly before he was imprisoned for gorse indecencies. This play is divided into 3 acts; I will be discussing and contrasting scenes one and two from the first act. It is a play about two idle young men, Algernon and Earnest (otherwise known as Jack), who in attempt to marry two very attractive young ladies pretend that there names are Earnest. In the first act the key relationships between Algernon and Jack are as friends who have not seen each other for a period off about a week. It is in the first scene that Algernon discovers that his friends name isnt earnest, its Jack. In the second scene Earnest proposes to Gwendolyn but gets refused by her mother and Algernon decides to go visit Jack in the country. I believe that too correctly portray the relationships between the two characters I need to show differences between; mood, tone, dress and personality. The first act, scene 1, opens with Algernon talking to his manservant in a very incoherent manor; I would portray Algernon as a man who is not very interested in anything but himself. Algernon is constantly talking in the first person always with emphasis on the word I this referring to himself, this gives the audience helpful insight into what really matters in life, him! Jack enters dressed in a smart but not ostentations attire, Algernon in contrast is dressed in an ostentatious suit with large cuffs and is eating. The men talk idly; Algernon is a dandy, he see only the pleasures in life and has no worries, I as Algernon would constantly smile, raise my eyebrows and lounge around on the couch or chair, crossing my legs and eating in a most informal manor. Jack is much more serious and formal, his clothes are a darker colour, he has come up too town to propose to her [Gwendolyn] this is making him nervous, but he is a complete gentlemen. He is easily manipulated by Algernon, the tone of his voice is slightly deeper then Algernons and I would portray his personality at this point as one who is board but as the same time is nervous. Jack confesses that his name isnt Earnest at all, its Jack, to Algernons amazement. At this time I, as Algernon, stand up horrified with looks of shock and stunned indignation upon my face and my tone would go up a note to signify surprise, I place my hand on my hips and stair at Jack up in arms that he did not tells this to me sooner. Lady Bracknell enters with Gwendolyn (Jacks bride to be) and I watch with pleasure as Jack squirms and blushes in front of Ms Fairfax (Gwendolyn) I leave the room to allow Jack to propose. Algernon is constantly trying to get one over on his naive friend but in contrast Jack (formally known as Earnest) has shown that in some ways such as; mood, tone and personality he is quite similar to Algernon and is not so naive and easily manipulated as one might think. Scene two, in mid proposal, on bended knee Lady Bracknell enters and is shocked at what she sees, I as Jack am even more shocked and suddenly start with absolute fright as the colour drains out of my face. Lady Bracknell begins to interview me as to my suitability to be married to her only daughter, I am extremely nervous, fiddling with my hand, running fingers through my hair and playing with my cuffs to show the audience just what an unpleasant situation it is. My voice is shaking. As the interview digresses I (Jack) starts to fell more comfortable with some of the questions, I starts to relax and gain more control over my emotions. Aunt Augusta then asks about my parentage (Jack is adopted) and I hurriedly confess that I have none, to her abhorrence lady Bracknell leaves and Jack is left looking stunned and shocked. Shakespeare wedding march can be heard coming from Algernons piano and he walks in very gay and debonair strutting and swinging his arms, he suddenly sees that his friend is very upset and his temperament changes to one of compassion, Gwendolyns always refusing people as if to tell Jack that he is not the only one. Jack confesses that it was Aunt Augusta that refused him, in contrast to the first scene Jack becomes less of a Gentleman and displays his anger by distributing Aunt Augusta, I as Jack have a very upset tone and am pacing, which is one of Algernons mannerisms. Gwendolyn enters and confesses her love to Jack, Jack is pleased and blushes, and he is once more his chivalrous self. Algernon confesses that his Aunt would not like this meeting taking place and is hurriedly told by Gwendolen to turn his back and give them privacy. I (Algernon) am not used to being told what to do especially in my own house, I pace over to the fireplace and start eavesdropping on there convocation in full view of the audience, I am trying to find Jacks address in the country and am behaving slightly sly about it. The scene ends with Jack rushing out on Algernon telling him that there meeting has not been a grate success, Jack is flushed, red in the face and peeved that is friend is acting so languidly about the whole situation. Jack leaves via stage right leaving Algernon and his manservant Lane occupying the stage. I look pleased and tell Lane to bring me some sherry, I am smiling, quite in contrast to Jacks last portrayal of his emotions, I stand up and confess in contrast to Jacks statement that the whole situation has been a great success and tell Lane, smiling and arrogantly, to fetch my suits as I am going to go visit Jack in the country and propose to his beautiful young ward whom I am in love with. I believe that as an actor the relationship between Jack and Algernon is not a complicated one. I as Algernon want to be married to Jacks excessively pretty young ward. Jack wants to be wed to my excessively pretty cousin, in this case are wants are similar. We both want to live happy, aimless lives with the woman we love. In my opium the only differences between Algernon and Earnest are there moods, personality, dress and tone; they both want the same things. As an actor I would portray this relationship kindly, in the first scene we are good friends and in slight contrast the second scene we are friends who have had a dispute but both know that we cannot stay exasperated at each other for ever and indeed in the final act, not to give the conclusion away, our relationship concludes, happily.

Based on the quotation that introduced the course according to the historian Marc Bloch, calamities are instruments that help see, study, and analyze the nature of human society. This can be attributed to the fact that as a human body, society has the capacity to maintain, to operate, and to defend itself. It also has the capacity to rebuild once it had been destroyed. The only question in the process of coping with the different forms of trials and disasters is the manner by which it can be undertaken. The course is aimed to open the minds of the students to the need for larger and more holistic objectives in the society which can help understand the reason for the need for continuous improvement of the different groups in the society such as political, economic, and social institutions. Due to the continuous exposure to natural disasters, human society had learned to establish ways and means to cope with the effects of calamities and disasters.
