Violent character Essay Abigail starts off in the play all innocent, but as the play progresses she becomes a more violent character. Shes had an affair with John Proctor and wants him, but he wants to stop the affair altogether, she accuses him of being cowardly Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be. She really doenst want John to stay with Elizabeth so later on she tries to blame her for witchery. She makes the scene really dramatic, and grabbes the audiences attention more in a way of what they think of her now, to what they thaught of her at the start of the play. This man is a newcomer to Salem, an outsider who the people are not very accepting of him. One of the reasons maybe that hes no were near as religious as the people of Salem, for example I have trouble enough without I come five mile to hear him preach only hellfire and bloody damnation. Take it to heart Mr Parris, there are many others who stay away from church these days because you hardily ever mension God anymore. This makes Parris angry, and aroused, he replies with Why, thats a drastic charge!  As the play goes on, in act 1 we learn that Parris is an important man, but also a man with enemies. The Putnams are always trying to find ways of sending him down, they get a great chance when his daughter is accused of being a witch. From this mans language in the play, the audience think of him more as being a respected man, but also one who doesnt want his authority questioned. Reverrand Hale comes into the play towrads the end of act one, he plays a very straight forward man, hes infact a man who knows a lot about witches, thats why Rev. Parris sends for him when Betty is taken ill.  He rises the tension in the play by shouting at the suspected girls who were dancing in the woods, shouting at them to confess about Lucifer.  In The Crucible there has been quite a lot of emotionaly charged scenes , like when Abigail and Proctor were discussing their affair behind the barn building, also theres been a lot of violence and arguments, for example when Tituba was being wipped for being accused of conjuring spirits in the woods, then Abigail was shouting all the bad things what Tituba was ment to have done. There was arguments like when Parris was arguing with Abigail, do you look for wipping, I thaught I saw someone running naked through the trees! and when Abigail says its not true he replies in anger I saw it!. I think the most dramatic scene was when the girls were dancing in the woods because they were all screaming with someone naked, with a chamber pot in the middle where a innocent chicken was sacrificed for the sake of the girls sportin as it were.  There were lots of interrogation scenes like when Rev. Hale was asking the girls who were dancing in the woods, who conjured spirits, he had them all in a line until one of them spoke out and accused Abigail. Abigail replied in anger and strongly denied the accusation. This builds up tension in the scene. Another thing that the audience want to know is if Abigail and Proctor are still sleeping together, further on in the play we find they dont, Its mostly based on Proctor and whether he is to save his life and lie, or go with his concience and suffer the consiquences.  I think what makes the plot dramatic is all the happenings comming at once, like the witchcraft, Abigail and Proctors affair, Betty being ill, Parriss disputes with the Putnams and Tituba being accused and beaten all packed into the opening scene of the play. Another small factor is Abigails dialogue being more and more violent as she gets more annoyed, first she was quiet later shes loud and violent. I think Arthur Miller chose to set the play in Salem simply because it was a very religious community with strong views on witchcraft and the supernatural, so if anything of the sort was to happen, serious problems would occur.  The play is also set in the spring time, which is ironic, and also it maybe a new start for the people, it almost looks like nothing bad would ever happen there, as if its a fairy tale land in a childrens book. Salem was a place where the community was divided between people who done good or bad thing in their life, for example Rev Parris has a faction within the church to drive him out. Sale is also a community split by religious disputes.  Another place is scene 1 which creates dramatic tension is when Rev. Parris in the small room where hes arguing with Abigail, hes almost in prisoned in the small dark room, where outside its bright and sunny. Almost making the audience think that Parris is a harsh, cruel man with something about him. If it started were he where outside, the audiences may have a different view on him. The stage directions help to build the tension in ways which build up towards the heat of the argument (the explosive force crucible), for example when Abigail keeps coming on stage and critisising Goody Putnam. When people come in and out of the play all the time, its not as boring for the audience which makes them want to see whats going to happen next, therefore building up dramatic tension all the way through. Characters appearing in and out of the play at specific times helps the audience build up a picture of what is happening and whats going to happen, they may mension or give clues on where theyre going then return when whether the audience expects it or not, most of the time if the writer of the play wants to create dramatic tension the characters will pop up when the audience leasts expects it. This helps give false expectations of the characters where abouts building up the tension bit by bit. To concude this essay I think think scene one in The Crucible is dramatic because of all the major happenings occur all together in one, action-packed scene, as I have explained earlier on in this essay. I think its a very effective first act because it grabs the audiences attention straight away, even in the first few minutes of the play. Scene one leaves you where you desperately want to see what is going to happen to the characters later on in the play. I think the audiences would have reacted in different ways, when the girls were dancing at the start of the play and Abigail smashed the chiken on the ground getting blood all over her face the audiences would have been quite shocked and even more shocked when they saw a naked woman all this was very dramatic, I think Miller deliberatley wanted the girl to be naked because of this.  Another audience catching scene was when Abigail and Proctor were behind the barn discussing their affair and Abigail said you sweated like a stalion when I ever came near, the audience must have been enthrolled at the thaught they were taking risks on having an affair in such a strict community.

The Turning Point Probably the most important turning point in my life happened in 1992. At this time, I was eight years old and living in Williamsport Pennsylvania. My dad had a well-paying job at Anchor Darling Valve Company, I was attending a parochial school and I thought life was just great. At the time we lived in a large four-story house with a separate three-story garage and an acre of forest for a backyard. I had a ten-speed bicycle and I would often go bicycling with my friends at the nearby cemetery. No-one ever objected to this, in fact people would often have picnics at the top of this hill at the cemetery. I guess the only things I ever complained about were the constant music lessons and practice sessions my parents subjected me to. Life was great until my dad came home one day with bad news. As it turned out, his well-paying company was downsizing and they had to let him go. Well, I didn't think much of it at the time. "So he'd get a new job," I thought. Well anyway, he took out his resume and started mailing away. Oh well, life goes on. Well soon enough companies began to take interest in him and he decided to join a company called Cellular One (which would later be bought by ATT and become ATT Wireless Services). So what was the catch? Well, Cellular One's offices are based in Pittsburgh which is not exactly an easy commute from Williamsport. "Carlos, we will have to move, but it won't happen for a while. We'll make sure you finish the school year and besides, I still have to look for a job in Pittsburgh too," my mom told me. Somehow, although I knew my parents had many friends in Williamsport,... ...ttsburgh than I would have ever been able to in Williamsport. I learned how to ski and rock climb, things I became good at and still do today. I also suddenly had a deep appreciation for music. This was something I had never had, now all of a sudden, I actually practiced when I was supposed to (this probably had something to do with the new music teachers). I also took up karate again and eventually earned my black belt. I realized that Williamsport was actually a dull place to live in and the only things I really missed were my friends and the house. Before I knew it, we had lived in Pittsburgh for six years and although it may not be the best place to live in, it has opened up a whole world of opportunities to me. That was something I may never have gotten if I had stayed in Williamsport or if I had continued to move around.

Ann Romney was asked during her speech at a Moms for Mitt meeting, â€Å"Why should women get equal pay?† The ladies of the meeting wanted her opinion on equal pay for employees based on gender. She took no time to answer the question with a response that would shock the audience into silence to hear the following: â€Å"Why should women be paid equal to men? Men have been in the working world a lot longer and deserve to be paid at a higher rate. Heck, I’m a working mom and I’m not paid a dime. I depend on my husband to provide for me and my family, as should most women†¦ and if a woman does work, she should be happy just to be out there in the working world and quit complaining that she’s not making as much as her male counterparts. I mean really, all this wanting to be equal nonsense is going to be detrimental to the future of women everywhere. Who’s going to want to hire a woman, or for that matter, even marry a woman who thinks she is the same, if not better than a man at any job. It’s almost laughable. C’mon now ladies, are you with me on this?† When Mrs. Romney finished speaking, there was an awkward silence in the room with scattered applause that seemed a bit forced because of the audience’s support for her husband. Seemingly, Ann Romney was embarrassed and was escorted to a vehicle that took her to her husband. I view Ann’s perspective as a pre- meditated woman who believes women aren’t the backbone of this country just as much as men. But all women have the right to the same and equal opportunities as men. I wonder if her speech affected her husband’s presidential campaign.

To my understanding in Hughes argument no matter how true his paper will be it cannot be the same because he is a colored man while his Instructor is a white man. In line six Hughes already begins to question If writing a paper about himself Is really that simple. He states that he Is twenty two colored and born In Winston-Salem, he also explains were he went to school, and how he Is the only colored student In his school. Here I feel that Hughes Is singling himself out not because he chooses to, but mainly because during his time it was not right for whites and blacks to go to school with one another, so here I saw how Hughes feels that this paper can never be true, because people during this time period were fighting against what was true that blacks and whites were now able to coexist with one another. Hughes also does an amazing comparison just between himself and his Instructor in lines twenty-eight and beyond. But it will be a part of you, instructor. You are white-yet a part of me, as I am part of you. Thats American. These were strong words for a man of his time and era to write and produce. Not only Is he saying that all men of different races are the same, but they are still different In general. Different In not Just the way they look, but also different when It comes to values, and culture. Even though both of these men are of American decent and culture they still have other identities in which they relate to themselves. In Hughes case he was a man of mixed races but saw himself mainly as a black man cause thats what other people naturally portrayed him as. Hughes also states in the poem that he may learn from his white Instructor and they might be apart of each other they sometimes do not want to be. As humans, they both learn from one another and that is what is really true. In the poem Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas, he writes about this eerie connection to death and that good night. Also, during the time of this poems existence Thomas father was close to his death when this poem was written, there were many comparisons that I noted relating to that time on his life In this mom. In lines one threw three Thomas writes, Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Thomas is angry about his fathers state in time, his father must have meant so much to him and labeled him as his light. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light this paragraph confused me at first, and I did not know how to interpret it. It comes cross that Thomas was metaphorically saying that the light was being drained out of his fathers eyes leaving him with this blind look upon his face. Thomas continues to be upset towards death for taking his father away from him and not allowing him to stay longer. Finally in the last paragraph Thomas writes, And you, my father, there on the sad height, curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Here once again Thomas does not agree with the leaving of his father to death. He mentions that courage his father ad towards the very end using the metaphor, your fierce tears even thought his father might have possibly appeared afraid he was still brave towards the very end as he lied on his deathbed the sad height. As all of this is happening Thomas never lets us forget towards the end of each paragraph that he is not ready for his father to pass and that he has much anger and rage towards death for taking him away. Despite all of the negativity Thomas never let the memory of his father leave his mind, this must have been such a hard and challenging time for Thomas to loose such an important figure in his life so much hat it affected his poetry. This poem seemed to have such a powerful impact on himself as a writer but as a son as well. He fought against death as much as he could be accepted the fate his father was going to face, each line carried deep and personal meaning to it, Each poem in the end carried and harbored its own message that I hope I clearly understood, race should never be an issue, we are all equals but have differences. Death no matter when it comes can never steal the feelings we all have towards loved ones including what we write and remember.

What is a gentleman? A typical gentleman in modern day society is perceived as an alien concept. In 1463, a gentleman was defined as a man of rank but in 1583 a gentleman was said to be as a man of superior position or a man of leisure. However, in 1852 a gentleman was described as a wealthy man with no occupation. Yet, the traditional view of a gentleman was a man of gentle birth, a noble man who was not royalty, and a man of distinction. The first time we see Dickens use an instance of being a gentleman is in Chapter One through Pips attitude towards the convict. As Magwitch orders Pip around, yelling Tell us your name! Quick! Pip surprises us by responding in a much more polite manner than we would expect of someone in this situation. We notice a difference in dialect here; Magwitch is rough and has a very harsh voice, whereas Pips is much more refined. This suggests that Dickens created Pip with an underlying sense of being a gentleman from the start, but Pip believes himself to be more common. At home, Pips sister has brought him up in accordance with the very traditional notion of children should be seen and not heard. This could be a factor that has led to Pips politeness. However, she does not believe him to be as well-behaved and mannerly as he is. This is evident when she calls him naturally vicious. When the convict is found, Joe is called to help catch him. Pip goes along with him, and in this chapter we realize where Pip gets his decency. Joe has a simple dignity and compassion, and by caring for the convict and getting him what he needs, we notice that Pip shares these characteristics. Pip was worried that they would find the convict and his role would be discovered, but we see that Magwitch does not betray Pip when he is caught. This could suggest that there is to be other encounters with him later on, and that the convict does not want to be on unfriendly terms with Pip. In Chapter Seven Pip is invited to play at Miss Havishams, yet he does not understand why. She is a rich lady and before he goes he is thoroughly cleaned. This shows that they are a typical working-class family in Victorian times. At Miss Havishams we again witness Pips gentility. He responds to her using Maam. He is a young boy who could be excused for talking to her as he would to anybody else, but he again shows how he has the potential to be a gentleman. Also, throughout the book he speaks to all his elders in this way. This shows the respect he has, and how he has been brought up well. However, we do not see any politeness from Miss Havisham. We are also introduced to Estella, the young girl who was adopted by Miss Havisham. Her name means star, which is quite ironic. Miss Havisham has trained her to break hearts, and Pip is the boy Estella is to practice on. Pips gentility shows again when, after Estella is cruel towards him, he forgives her. He is so in love with her that her beauty makes him forget her unpleasantness. His love for her develops so much that he wants to ask her out, but he feels he is not good enough for her because he is poor.

Mental State Examination (MSE) | Case Study Ellie Fitz-Gerald Giving examples from the case study, how would you describe Amanda’s behaviour and appearance as set out in a MSE? A mental state examination (MSE) is used to assess an individuals mental capacity and reasoning at the time of an interview. It couples a number of cognitive domains in an attempt to characterise a person’s mental state (PCDCBP, 2011). The first domain of a MSE is a visual assessment of the patient, non-judgementally describing an accurate appearance of the patient including as many details as possible. These aspects include but are not limited to age, gender, build, posture, grooming, hygiene, heath levels, signs of drug use, hair style and colour and ethnicity. Behaviour is another non-judgemental assessment of the patient’s behaviour in general, but also a description of eye movement and eye contact, body movement and any gestures that are made. This is often coupled with an interpretation of the patient’s reaction to their current situation; examples may include descriptions such as being cooperative, hostile, withdrawn or suspicious (PCDCBP, 2011). Appearance: Amanda is a young woman with dyed blue and pink hair, which is mattered and unkempt. She has a number of piercings in her nose, eyebrow and lip. Her arms are covered in sores and her pupils are dilated. On paramedic arrival, they described that Amanda was â€Å"sitting upright appearing dazed and anxious†. In the cubicle on arrival to ED, she appeared very tense. Later in the cubicle, Amanda is smiling and then quickly appears terrified. Amanda’s mother has reported that â€Å"she [Amanda] comes home dishevelled and dirty. She has lost a lot of weight†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Behaviour: Amanda’s behaviour over the course of the case study could be described as erratic, often shifting between states of anxiety, happiness and terror. On arrival of the paramedics, Amanda was described as â€Å"anxious and short of breath†. In the cubicle at the ED, Amanda was pacing up and down the corridor and wringing her hands occasionally, responding quickly to any stimulus by staring intensely at the ceiling or at staff members. A description of her eye sight involved her manner and gaze alternating â€Å"between being intrigued to afraid to hostile†, coupled with difficulty remaining still. Amanda was hesitant to be touched, and noted to be constantly picking at sores. Later, Amanda was later happy and quickly turned to terror and despair. Amanda is described by her mother in these examples; â€Å"Amanda hasn’t been herself since dropping out of university†¦Ã¢â‚¬ , â€Å"She has lost contact gradually with nearly all of her friend an d become increasingly isolated†, â€Å"Over the last three months her behaviour has become increasingly odd and erratic†, â€Å"goes out, sometimes for days at a time†, â€Å"talking loudly to herself in her room†¦over the past week she has been shouting†¦but there was no one in her room with her.†, â€Å"Last night she burst out of her bedroom and screaming incomprehensibly at her father then stopped suddenly and went back into her room.† Define cognition and then briefly discuss how we might interpret how both Amanda’s thought content and thought form are disturbed? According to Miller and Wallis (2009), cognitive or executive control, or cognition, refers to the ability to coordinate thought and action and direct it toward obtaining goals. Cognition is important in planning and sequencing complex events of behaviour, as well as prioritizing goals (Miller and Wallis, 2009). Thought content and processing is a somewhat subjective insight into cognitive capacity. For example, thought process can be a description of a patients thinking and a characterisation of how a patient’s ideas are communicated. The speed of thought is how quickly a patient changes ideas, known as ‘flight of ideas’ (Snyderman and Rovner, 2009). An example exhibited by Amanda is in the ED cubicle where she had asked the clinician â€Å"You wont tell her anything will you?†, quickly progressing through a series of thoughts from â€Å"you know don’t you?† to â€Å"They’re everywhere† to â€Å"The whole planet is falling† and then â€Å"Shut up shut up†. Additionally, thought form is another domain which could be described as goal-directed or conversely, disorganised. These terms carry descriptors, describing whether a patients thoughts are logical, tangential (quickly diverging, as shown through Amanda’s haphazard thought progression), circumstantial (unsupported thinking) or loosely associated (Snyderman and Rovner, 2009). Amanda displays a number of disorganized thought categories, stating â€Å"Everyone of us is falling – the whole planet is falling† is a description of both unsupported thinking, and potentially an illusion Amanda is experiencing. Another interpretation of disordered thought is that of intrusive thoughts or obsessive ideas. As severity of mental health illness increases, patients may exhibit delusional thinking (a false belief not held by peers that persists despite evidence to the contrary), hallucinations (false perception of sensory stimuli) or illusions (a misperception of real life) (Mar tin, 1990). With the purchase of this new territory, the land area of America nearly doubled. This land deal was arguably the greatest achievement of Thomas Jefferson's presidency, but also posed a major philosophical problem for Jefferson.As a strong Republican, Jefferson did not believe in straying from the exact words of the Constitution. With the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson had clearly not followed his own strict interpretation of the Constitution. Federalist critics howled that the Constitution nowhere permitted the federal government to purchase new land. Jefferson was troubled by the inconsistency, but in the end decided that the Constitution's treaty-making provisions allowed him room to act. The change of ownership of this key port resulted in its closing to Americans. Therefore, Jefferson sent envoys to France to try and secure its purchase.With increased pressure, Jefferson decided to go thro ugh with the purchase. Luckily, the people of the United States basically agreed that this was an excellent move. The Louisiana Purchase demonstrates Jefferson's ability to make pragmatic political decisions. Although contrary to some of his central principles, guaranteeing western expansion was so important to Jefferson's overall vision that he took bold action. Increased resources, westward expansion, and a growing sense of national pride all resulted from the purchase. The gains were dramatic, as the territory acquired would in time add 13 new states to the union.
